Mather Basecamp FAQ's

This newsletter is published to update the registered Troop 19 participants on the Grand Canyon Trip 2000. This issue is to summarize our planning process to date to ensure that all our participants are prepared for the trip.

Itinerary
The troop has booked United Airlines flight for all participants to depart Manchester NH on Saturday, April 22nd. Upon arrival in Las Vegas, the troop will travel by motor coach and two vans to our basecamp (Mather Camp) at the Grand Canyon. The return flight is on Saturday, April 29th.

Payment Schedule
We are still on budget at $500/person. Worse case scenario is a 10% deviation. This will depend upon the final campsite arrangements, permits, additional transportation requirements and food costs. All deposits become non-refundable on October 5th. It is also imperative that you do not miss any payment schedules. This is necessary to ensure payment to vendors and to lock in our crews for the permits. The deposits can be paid at the troop meetings or mailed to:
Barbara Perkins 22 Watersedge Drive, Nashua, NH 03063 (Tel: 889-4543)

April 15 $ 50
August 3 $ 100 (and completed survey)
October 5 $ 150
January 25 $ 200
Total $ 500 +-10%

Survey Form
Please complete the attached survey form and return this no later than the August 3rd Troop Meeting or mail to Jim Hayford 9 Laconia Drive, Nashua, NH 03063 (Tel: 880-1332) postmarked by August 3rd.

Trip Requirements
What if I don't complete all the requirements? What if I am not First Class in time? Do adults need to take the shakedown hikes too?
All youth and adult participants shall complete the hike requirements. Scouts are also expected to meet the age (if required), 1st Class rank and Scout Spirit requirements. This information has been presented on numerous occasions and can be viewed at www.troop19.org. Participants that have failed to meet the requirements by October 5th will be given the option to withdraw from the trip or to take the "Tourist Trap Trip" which will consist of tenting at Mather basecamp and only day hiking. The only exception to this are scouts who are still working toward 1st Class. They will have until April 1 to complete First Class. Failure to complete First Class by April 1 will result in the scout camping at Mather basecamp. Please note that we will be unable to refund any non-1st Class Scouts after October 5th. We must adhere to the hike requirement guidelines to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable trip.

Adult Responsibilities
What is my role if I am an adult?
The In-Canyon Scouts and adults (Crews A, B and C) will consist of approximately 7 hiking crews. Each crew will elect a scout as the crew leader. One adult will be the Crew Advisor and the second and third adults will be the Assistant Advisors. The crews will be self sufficient for the entire week at the Canyon. This includes camping, hiking and sightseeing as a crew. Any days spent above the rim will require the Crew Advisors to chaperone the scouts in their crew. The Crew Leader and Crew Advisors will receive a Crew Guidebook to prepare their crew for the trip. The guidebook will include trip itinerary, maps; program options while at basecamp, backpacking and camping skill topics to review, menus and shopping lists while above Canyon and the BSA Guide to Safe Scouting.

Mather Basecamp
What is the weather like in April at Basecamp?
You should expect cold nights to 20F and daytime temperatures from 40-90F. A comparison is the weather in November during our Turkey Campout. If you think you will be uncomfortable in basecamp, you need to make room reservations now.

What activities are available for those staying in hotels or camping with the troop at Mather Basecamp?
Vicki Payne and Mike Dolan are preparing a list of suggested activities families may wish to do. This will be done on a family basis. The troop is not acting as a tour guide operator. Public transportation is available based on shuttle buses. Some activities are within walking distance.

What about meals in basecamp?
On route to the Canyon, one of the vans will stop to pick-up food and some perishables. Families can either place a food order in advance or food shop at the Canyon (higher prices). The market is 1/4 of a mile from basecamp. The nearest food store outside the park is about 40 miles away. The troop will issue a food credit to each participant not in Crews A, B and C. This credit will be based upon deducting the food expenses the crews incurred for the week.

The hiking crews (A, B and C) will continue to eat as a crew when they come out of the canyon. Menus and shopping lists will be prepared in advance for the crews for the time they are in Mather Campground. Crew Advisors will be expected to organize the food.

Family campers on the rim may wish to combine with other families for meals.

What troop equipment is available at Mather Camp?
The troop has available and can ship the Coleman 2 burner stoves, dining tarps, chef kits and utensil kits for family camping at Mather. Please indicate on the survey form if you will need any troop equipment. Crews A, B and C will use the troop tents during the week. Families will need to provide their own tentage. If you cannot take it on the plane with you, you are responsible to pack and ship it in advance to the same address the Troop will be using.
