TRIP PLANNING GUIDE FOR THE
 

Scouts and Parents signed up for the April 2000 Trip

Listed below are the tentative positions of leadership, and their job descriptions that we have. If you are interested in helping out, please contact James Hayford @ (603) 883-5354 for more information.

You will also find Leadership Guidelines that will be formulated in the following committee meetings.


Crew Advisor & Asst. (Adults) ­ Provide leadership and supervision of the crew during pre trip planning sessions and during the actual trip. Handle logistics and transportation issues for the crew during the trip.

Crew Leader & Asst. (Youth) ­ Plan program, run program and oversee operation of crew during both pre trip sessions and the actual trip. The crew members will do rim activities and Las Vegas activities as a crew.

Tour Director (Adult)
- Overall leader to oversee group from Manchester to Mather Campground and Mather Campground to Manchester.
- Oversee Planning operations
- Handle travel logistics:
- Airplane, bus & van arrangements
- Group check in at airport for luggage
- Transport from Las Vegas to Mather Campground
- Transport from Mather Campground to Hoover Dam to Las Vegas
- Hotel overnight in Las Vegas & meals
- Transport from hotel to airport and return to Manchester
- Manage trip budget

Quartermaster (Adult)
­ Review equipment needs with each crew.
­ Responsible for sign out of troop equipment (stoves, cook pots & utensils, Tents basecamp stuff, food storage boxes)
­ Transportation of troop equipment from NH to AZ and return
­ Plan for obtaining fuel for backpack stoves and basecamp stoves
­ Sign in of equipment after the trip.

Grubmaster (Adult)
­ Work with crews to determine trail and basecamp menus. Develop food procurement plan with crews. Coordinate food purchases both pre-trip and during trip.
­ Develop list of menus, cooking directions & health and sanitation hints. Food purchase & packing plan, Purchase non perishables in Nashua and pack for trip & ship out. Grubmaster will pickup a small amount of perishable items in route to the GCNP. Final packing for trip will happen at Mather Campground.
­ Breakout of Crew cooked meals vs. cafeteria meals vs. trail lunches
­ Manage food portion of trip budget

Mather coordinator(Adult)
- Establish policies of Mather base camp.
- Interface with crew advisors for travel logistics and use of van to transport crew to trailhead to start trip and crew pickup at end of trip.
- Interface with crews and family groups in basecamp with respect to use of the vans
- Determine approach to store food, troop gear and personal gear while participants are on backpacking trips
- Responsible for order in and security of the campsite
- Emergency contact during crews inner canyon experiences
- Know location of all participants while the crews are on rim.
- Lineup contacts as part of our emergency plan
- Pick up role of Tour director when basecamp is in operation
- Work with quartermaster to determine equipment needs for basecamp
- Coordinate setup and tear down of basecamp
- Hold troop checkbook during trip to handle petty cash type expenses
- Coordinate food, fuel, ice and perishables as needed to support base camp

Duty roster rotations for cooking, water & cleanup and camp site management
Crew equipment list, personal equipment list & recommendations for packing
Travel etiquette
Uniform while traveling , troop T shirts on rim, at Hoover dam and in Vegas, scouting
Appropriate during rest of trip
Expectations while in Las Vegas - no gambling !
Personal budget for trip (How much money to bring ?)

Expectations of non scouts on trip
Support of GCNP experience
Be polite to others when not using the Troop meal plan. i.e. don't bring Pizza into Mather campground if you do not intend to share it.
Families expected to adopt scouts while staying at hotel in Las Vegas and to chaperone adopted scouts while in Vegas

Trail etiquette

Mule encounters
Uphill hiker has right of way
Do not throw anything off trails. People are below
Leave pack on trail during separations
Stop at all intersections or questionable terrain areas
Designate lead & sweep hikers

Water purification methods (Boil, Pump, Purify)
Cooking, cleanup and handling of food waste
Stoves, fueling, lighting and field repair
Food storage - must hang food at night to prevent squirrels from eating it.
No food in tents.
Packs, packing & waterproofing, Packs to be left out under small tarp or pack
rain cover at night.
Hygiene and handling of human waste
First Aid & CPR
GCNP, "Leave no trace" brochure
Emergency / contingency plans

Operation of Mather campground:
Minimum group size when walking from campground to store or Rim trail
Adult supervision requirements
Signout / Signin requirements
Use of Van(s) resource
Coordination of day activities of all those on rim
Plan for storage of personal gear while on trail
Plan for cooking and food storage
Campground security plan - at least 2 in camp at all times
Daily meetings of Crew leaders & Advisors for all crews in camp
Evening campfire & ranger programs
Plan to handle $ matters during trip
