"To the Colorado"
Everyone "slept in" up by seven. Everyone
said they slept great. After yesterday's long adventure I'm sure
they did! Scouts made breakfast and then went to play in the
creek. Some nice waterfalls up river.
Finally got everyone organized again and started moving by
10:30 am just as the hot sun was rising above the cliffs and
hitting the campsite. We walked down Hermits Creek to the Colorado.
We didn't need to walk the trail, as the creek was low enough
to walk down the dry riverbed, although we could see where the
trail followed along the creek during higher water. Saw many
toads of different colors. They seem to camouflage themselves
with the rocks and the water. Scenery along the creek was magnificent!
Beautiful cliffs looking up. At this point it really feels like
we are at the bottom of the canyon. Nowhere to look but up!
We heard the Colorado before we saw it. Hermits rapids is
where Hermits Creek flows into the Colorado. Scout's reactions
were "WOW!" Awesome rapids! Just over an hour to hike
from hermits Creek.
We were amazed there was a nice sandy beach for camping right
next to the river. We later discovered it was called Monument
Beach. Packs came off quickly, boots even faster. Mrs. Chaput
decided we should rope off a swimming area because the current
was fast and the water dropped off quickly. Ahhh! How refreshing
to jump in! "IT"S COLD!"
The water was about 45 degrees!.
Ahhh! High noon on the Colorado River. Perfect weather like
yesterday. No clouds and the bluest sky. We are truly blessed
to see such a place on a picture perfect day!
We spent the afternoon lounging around. Now this is a vacation!
Noone really wanted to do much of anything after yesterday's
grueling adventure. Saw some rafters go through the rapids. They
got WET! I am now sitting in the sun on a sandy beach next to
the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon! How cool
is this? It almost seems surreal to me. Looking up at the cliffs
it is absolutely beautiful and very hard to describe in words.
The scouts spent most of the day lying in the creek. It must
be over 100 degrees! (Ed. note: we later learned it was 110 degrees
on this day!). Creek water is warmer than the Colorado, about
65.
Set up tents and made dinner. Tonight is power dinner, yuck!
Not a good one. Seemed to have everything but the kitchen sink
in it.
Went to bed as darkness fell. I lay in my tent looking up
at the Big Dipper. It seems close enough to touch on a clear
night. I don't want to lose this sight!
