February 1st - Safety and First Aid Session |
Instructor: Mike Dolan and Garry
Crane 30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting) Topics to include: Heat Exhaustion, Heat Stroke, Water Intoxication, Rock Scrambling, Snake and Scorpion Bites, Water Treatment, Buddy System Expected Outcome: Participants can demonstrate basic skills for the prevention of injuries and know how to treat specific canyon related first aid situations |
February 15 Leave No Trace |
Instructor-Greg Anthony 30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting) Topics to include: Low impact camping and hiking skills |
February 29 Hiking and Navigation Skills |
Instructor-Garry Crane, James Hayford 30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting) Topics to include: Keeping the group together, pace, rest breaks, buddy system, route finding, water caching basics, hiking hygiene (review from Leave no Trace), do not deviate from the itinerary, orienting a map skills, water and food intake while hiking, rock scrambling, cairns, know your boot imprint and ID your group with a marking |
March 7 Cooking |
Instructor- 30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting) Topics to include; food storage, know your 4 footed guests, carry -in and take-out, food disposal, no fire rule, meal preparation and clean-up, duty rosters and menus, trail snacks while hiking |
March 21 Stove operation, repair and safety |
Instructor- 30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting) Topics to include; using the stoves in the field and how to make repairs, refueling, storing fuel for hiking, safe operation |
March 27 Repackaging Food for backpacking (Monday Night) |
Instructor-John Henning and Richard Perkins Crews are given the equipment needed for the shake-down hike (tents, stoves cook kits etc.) |
April 1-2 Final Shakedown Hike |

April 8 - Shipment to Grand Canyon Airport for Crew Equipment |
Leader-Richard Perkins Saturday, April 8th Time: Crew Leaders meet at church on Saturday to pack their Crew Box. Tents and cooking equipment from the shake down hike is inspected for the last time Equipment must be dry and clean from the Shakedown hikes. Crew leaders must be certain that all equipment has been returned and packed from the Shakedown Hike. |
April 10 - Final Participants Meeting (Monday Night) |
90 minutes- Monday night meeting Leader-Jim Hayford and Greg Anthony Review itinerary, group behavior and expectations while traveling, uniforms, distribute T-shirts, vehicle assignments, collect medical forms, and distribute troop guidebook, buddy system Pack all packs with all gear (food, shelter, and personal gear) Natural (and other) History |
