Text Box: March 1 – Personal Gear
Instructor - Jim Woodward
30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting)
Topics to include:
Personal gear do’s and don’ts.  Breakdown of all gear (backpacks, shoes, clothing, toiletries, head lamps, first aid supplies, etc.)
Expected Outcome:
Participants will come away with a list of personal gear they will need for the Yellowstone trip that they might not have or need to update.  This will give them time to purchase items they don’t have and break-in new shoes before the first shakedown hike.


March 15th - Leave No Trace
Instructor - Gerry Crane
30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting)
Topics to include: Low impact camping and hiking skills


March ? ­ Hiking and Navigation Skills
Instructor - Lon Paulsen
30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting)
Topics to include: Keeping the group together, pace, rest breaks, buddy system, route finding, water caching basics, hiking hygiene (review from Leave no Trace), do not deviate from the itinerary, orienting a map skills.


April 5th - Cooking / Clean-Up
Instructor-Jim Woodward
30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting)
Topics to include; food storage, know your 4 footed guests, carry -in and take-out, food disposal, no fire rule, meal preparation and clean-up, duty rosters and menus, trail snacks while hiking.  And clean up skills.



April 12th  ­ Stove operation, repair and safety, water purifier
Instructor-Jim Woodward
30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting)
Topics to include; using the stoves in the field and how to make repairs, refueling, storing fuel for hiking, safe operation.
And safe use and different methods of water purification



April 19th - Safety and First Aid Session
Instructor – Bob Lucci
30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting)
Topics to include:
Heat Exhaustion, Heat Stroke, Water Intoxication, Rock Scrambling, Snake Bites, Water Treatment, Buddy System
Expected Outcome:
Participants can demonstrate basic skills for the prevention of injuries and know how to treat specific Yellowstone related first aid situations



May 10th - Safety in the Outdoors
Instructor– Greg Anthony
30 minutes (part of a regular troop meeting)
Topics to include; bear awareness and attacks, lightning, hypothermia and a refresh of skills taught in February and March.  Discuss weather that might be encountered on the trip

At troop meetings the following training sessions are planned.

 

Each will start around 8:15pm and last about 30 minutes.

Parents— Please feel free to sit in on these training sessions.

Wfa, cpr, and troop training listed on this page.

 

Wilderness First Aid training (WFA) is REQUIRED for all adults hiking with the patrols.

WFA is being offered by Troop 19 on April 9th and 10th.  The cost for registered adults hiking with a patrol is covered by the Troop.  Other adults wanting the training are welcome.  Their cost will be $95.00.  COMPLETED.  THANK YOU SHERM!

 

CPR certification (or re-certification) will be offered on June 15th.

All registered adults hiking with a patrol should to have their CPR certification.  Scouts are highly encourage to take the training as well.  The cost will be free of charge to Troop 19 registered adults and scouts.  COMPLETED.  THANKS SHERM & BOB L!
